Reporter’s Notebook: The Philanthropy edition

John McDonaghPhilanthropy congers up the vision of a wealthy individual who contributes a portion of their personal wealth to organizations or causes about which they have passion or that touch them personally or possibly a family member in a time of need. For the sixth time, the Vancouver Business Journal’s Annual Philanthropy: Profiles in Giving edition offers another perspective of charitable giving – Corporate Philanthropy.

We have a host of businesses throughout the region which have as a core value the need to give back to the community in which they make their living and the living of their employees. You’ll find a half a dozen businesses highlighted in today’s edition of the VBJ as well as columns from area business owners and executives discussing why they believe it to be an important business strategy.

Additionally, you’ll find ranked lists of Foundations and Nonprofit Organizations in Clark County serving the Arts, Education, Emergency Service, Health and Community sectors through their respective organizations. These are by no means all of the organizations active in Clark County and Southwest Washington, but those we could include in today’s edition.

Just look down the list of chairs and board presidents to get a feel for how well these organizations are supported by the business community. The Volunteers and financial support that comes from the business community is something we can all feel very proud of. If corporate philanthropy hasn’t been a part of your business plan, these lists will give you more than enough information to reconsider the role of giving back. And those businesses featured in today’s edition provide a great road map for how to make it happen.

New Day Community Dental Clinic holds ribbon cutting ceremony

New Day Community Dental Clinic held a grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony earlier this month at its 1201 SE Tech Center Drive location in Vancouver.

The nonprofit clinic, which opened earlier this year, is funded by sliding scale customer fees and the support of grant, corporate and individual donors throughout the area. In many cases, and as funding becomes available, those who qualify for the clinic’s charitable dental programs pay nothing out of pocket.

New Day offers an array of dental services including:

▪ Preventive Care – Cleanings, exams, fluoride treatments and sealants for all ages

▪ Restorative Care – Including fillings, crowns, bridges, extractions and repair of broken teeth

▪ Prosthodontics – Dentures, partials, relines and flippers

▪ Periodontal Care – Root planing (deep cleanings) and periodontal maintenance

Burgerville partners with youth development program

Burgerville has announced a major sponsorship agreement with AC Portland, an emerging youth development initiative that aims to transform kids and communities through soccer. This year, AC Portland will reach more than 1,000 elementary school students and open AC programs at six locations in Portland-area neighborhoods struggling with low student achievement: St. Johns, Peninsula, Humboldt, Markham, Beaverton and outer East Portland.

Burgerville joins adidas America, the Portland Timbers and the Timbers Army 107IST in launching this national pilot program in the Portland Metro area.

“We are honored to support AC Portland in its quest to better the lives of local youth,” said Jeff Harvey, president and CEO of Burgerville. “Our goal is to not only help build momentum for this pilot program, but to truly enrich the lives of children and promote wellness and community in each of our restaurant’s neighborhoods.”

AC Portland was established in 2011, the MLS debut season of the Portland Timbers and fuses two nationally-recognized youth development programs that Adidas America has supported in cities across the country for many years.  AC Portland becomes the first city in the country where these programs are deployed as a part of a broader program that promotes a wide range of soccer, scholarship and service activity.

Liberty Theatre food film festival to benefit the Camas Farmers Market

The Liberty Theatre in Camas will present a festival of four films that focus on food. The festival, which runs September 23-29, is a benefit for the Camas Farmers Market. The nonprofit market is seeking $25,000 in donations this month to ensure its 2012 offerings don’t require major cutbacks due to economic hardships.

The Liberty will charge its regular $3.50 admission and is donating $.50 from the first 200 tickets sold during the week and $1 for each ticket beyond the first 200 to the market.

In addition to the film program, the Farmer’s Market will have a free kids craft day on Saturday, September 24 and a cooking demonstration on Tuesday, September 27 as well as the regular market activities on the final market of the season on Wednesday, September 28.
