BIA distributes $3 million rebate to members

Checks totaling $3 million in returns on industrial insurance went to members of the Building Industry Association of Clark County who have met standards of safety records July 25.

The Vancouver-based association awarded checks to about 600 members who met certain state Labor and Industries safety standards, according to the BIA. Checks ranged from $1,000 to more than $100,000, representing a 25 percent refund on L&I workers’ compensation payments for the last year.

Labor & Industries issues hot weather rule

The Washington State Department of Labor and Industries adopted a rule this summer to protect workers from heat-related illness.

The rule went into effect July 5, requiring employers with outdoor workers to train employees to recognize heat stress. Employers also must be able to respond appropriately to symptoms of heat stress and make more water available to workers when temperatures reach 89 degrees, or at lower temperatures when heavy clothing is required for work

The rules will apply each year from May 1 to Sept. 30.
