Breaking Ground

Northeast 88th Street Improvements

Clark County and Battle Ground-based Tapani Underground began improvements March 9 on Vancouver’s Northeast 88th Street between Northeast Andresen and St. Johns roads. The $5.5 million improvements will include two travel lanes, a center turn lane, bicycle lanes and sidewalks with stormwater collection and treatment, plus environmental mitigation planning. Tapani’s Darren Cahoon is project manager, overseeing changes to traffic signals at Northeast St. John’s Road, Northeast 64th Avenue, Northeast Andresen Road and the railroad signal at Northeast 88th Street. Completion is targeted for fall 2009. Until then, the road is closed to through traffic but is open to vehicles traveling to businesses and homes within the construction area.

Pacific Park Fire Station

The Vancouver Fire Department held a ceremonial groundbreaking March 13 for its Pacific Park Fire Station No. 10. Ridgefield-based Skyward Construction is the contractor working with Camas-based OoA Architecture on the $4.5 million project. The facility at 1501 N.E. 164th Ave. is expected to be earthquake-resistant and earn LEED silver certification. The 14,000-square-foot station will have three fire engine bays and dormitories for round-the-clock firefighters and medics. It will include space for community meetings and firefighter training, and a public lobby with a historic fire engine showcase. Completion is targeted for January 2010 and is expected to improve response times to neighborhoods including First Place and Countryside Woods.
