Battle Ground sewer to expand with population
Battle Ground has become Clark County’s second-largest city, according to a state population estimate, and its wastewater treatment systems will expand to accommodate that growth.
The city’s current population of 16,710 is second to Vancouver’s 162,400, and has grown 79.3 percent since the 2000 census, according to the city.
With continued growth, by 2013 Battle Ground’s need for wastewater treatment should exceed its share of the regional Salmon Creek Treatment Plant, according to Rob Charles, city public works director.
A citizen advisory committee held its first meeting July 10 to research funding methods for a new $35 million wastewater treatment facility that was called for in the city’s 20-year sewer plan of 2005. Possibilities include adjusting monthly sewer rates and system development charges.
The committee includes local business owners and residents, who are expected to give funding recommendations to the Battle Ground City Council by the end of 2008.
Construction of the wastewater treatment facility is set for 2012, and another $15 million expansion is planned for 2019.
Fourth Plain gets safety grant
Pedestrian and bicycle safety will get a boost on Fourth Plain Boulevard in Vancouver with a federal safety grant.
The grant will help the city of Vancouver’s transportation services department to pay for coordination and upgrades of traffic signal timing, increased police enforcement and public outreach, including a safety billboard at the intersection of Fourth Plain Boulevard and T Street.
