Local contractor promises $200,000 to Skills Center
During the successful fourth-annual Clark County Skills Center Foundation dinner March 23, longtime Clark County businessman Dale Lang announced he has made a $200,000 bequest to the skills center. Lang, founder and co-owner of Vancouver-based Lang Brothers Enterprises, has been instrumental in the development of the Skills Center Construction Technology Program since its inception 24 years ago.
Lang Brothers is a general contractor for residential and commercial construction that has employed many Skills Center graduates. In making the donation, Lang said the income from the Dale Lang Family Endowment Fund will accumulate then be used to buy equipment, provide scholarships and advance all programs at the center.
The foundation raised $15,000 in gifts and roughly $9,000 from ticket sales at the dinner, the first of which has been a fundraising event for the technical school.
Vancouver design studio wins national award
Vancouver-based Muller Design Studio’s design of a promotional air freshener has been selected as the winner of the National 2006 Silver Paragon Award in the Specialty Advertising category. Earlier, Muller Design Studio’s tradeshow display design was selected as the Regional 2006 Silver Medallion award winner in the Banners and Outdoor Media category. The air freshener was designed by Maya Muller, while the tradeshow display was designed by Sara Prator. Both works were commissioned and entered in the competitions by Lower Columbia College of Longview.
SWMC earns 100 Top Hospitals honors
Southwest has been named one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals for the sixth time. The ranking is part of The Solucient 100 Top Hospitals National Benchmarks for Success award.
SWMC is the only hospital in the Vancouver-Portland metro area to receive the 100 Top Hospitals honor this year and one of only 40 hospitals in the country to earn 100 Top Hospital status six times or more during the past 14 years. That puts Southwest among the top 1 percent of the more than 3,000 hospitals eligible for the ranking.
Southwest is ranked among teaching hospitals because of its family practice residency program, Family Medicine of Southwest Washington.
Solucient scores hospitals according to nine key organization-wide measures: risk-adjusted mortality, risk-adjusted complications, patient safety, core quality measures, growth in patient volumes, average length of stay, expense per adjusted discharge, profit from operations and cash-to-debt ratio.
Legacy offers wellness screening programs
Starting May 12, Legacy Salmon Creek Hospital is introducing monthly, noninvasive health screening options aimed at preventing illness promoting wellness.
Four screening packages are available. A $175 comprehensive package includes extensive heart and stroke screening by checking blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels, body fat and bone density and completing abdominal aortic and carotid ultrasounds and peripheral artery disease assessments.
Other packages range from a $30 basic screen to a $130 package aimed at cardiac health.
The first wellness screening will be May 12 at Legacy Salmon Creek, 2211 N.E. 139th St. in Vancouver. Screenings also will be offered May 17 at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital and Medical Center, 1015 N.W. 22nd Ave. in Portland. In the future, both hospitals will offer on-site screenings as well as in the communities they serve.
A cardiac nurse will be present to consult with participants and offer education materials or physician referrals.
