Several new warehouse buildings going up just east of Pearson Air Field in Vancouver are certainly a site for sore eyes. After months, even years of gloom and doom there is some inkling that things are starting to pick up a bit. Now it certainly isn’t a return to the build, build, build days of five or six years ago, but it is a move in the right direction. Despite some of the still dreary statewide and national numbers Clark County appears to be waking up. In November the City of Vancouver showed 35 new business listings including a new Bar & Grill, clothing stores, professional services, a ZipCar franchise and a drive thru coffee shop.
During this holiday season we seem to be hearing more than ever the phrase “Shop Local” in fact, it has become a Mantra for many in our community including here at the VBJ (see our winter edition of North Bank magazine). While we fully understand the need for national retailers and suppliers –we have several headquartered here in Southwest Washington – the impact of shopping with your local merchants can’t be stressed enough. Shopping locally keeps more money in the community, provides jobs, and one thing that is often forgotten is it allows you to meet your neighbors — the people you share your community with. So this shopping season make the effort to do at least part of your shopping at your locally owned and operated retailers and let’s do our part to keep OUR local economy moving forward as we go into the new year.
