Schauer commented that private businesses stepping up to the plate and taking on federal work is a much better end result than government simply hiring more federal workers. Additionally, he said, securing government contracts is a healthy way to diversify your business.
“If you are selling a product or service that only hits the folks working in residential construction, when construction falls off you’re stuck on that roller coaster. But if you can diversify your business by providing materials or services to a public agency as well, you can be better prepared for the fluctuating economy.
“What we have found is the market tends to cycle back and forth,” he added. “If you can figure out a way to have some of your eggs in both baskets, then you aren’t suffering the extreme highs or the extreme lows because you’re able to balance.”
