“We need to make every effort to stay on course this year to strengthen our financial position and handle any unexpected or unavoidable expenses,” Prata said in a press release.

The budget report comes after months of work by county staff to improve processes, technology and productivity.

“We have worked very hard to increase flexibility and timeliness, with the right people doing the right work,” said Clark County Assessor Peter Van Nortwick. “This would not have been possible without cooperation and input from my amazing staff.”

During a CVTV interview with the Vancouver Business Journal this week, Clark County Commissioner Steve Stuart acknowledged efforts to streamline services at the county. However, regarding the county budget as a whole, Stuart said he is concerned about increasing expenses.

“There is a structural deficit that we talk about … and that is that expenses are outpacing revenues, period. And that is simply maintaining the same level of service … that’s not increasing level of service, that’s not hiring new people. That is just that expenses for the real costs of doing businesses – the inflationary costs – go up more than our revenues increase. And that is a systemic problem that we have.”
