Designed to recognize exemplary sustainability programs and initiatives, awards are given based on the merit of entries received across multiple categories. The KapStone Longview Mill was honored with the 2013 Leadership in Sustainability – Greenhouse Gas Reduction/Energy Efficiency Award for its “One-Year Snapshot of Longview’s Multi-Year Journey” project.
The multi-million dollar project spanned three years and contributed to a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 72 percent over the last decade; a reduction of overall energy use by 37 percent since 2007; a reduction of overall energy used per ton of paper produced by 17.6 percent since 2007; and an increase of total tons of paper produced by 50 percent since 2006.
“KapStone’s Longview Mill project is a great example of stringent business discipline and out-of-the-box thinking,” said AF&PA President and CEO Donna Harman in a press release. “The integrated solutions used by the KapStone Longview Mill demonstrate that doing what’s right for business is also right for the environment.”
