Name: April Allen (Formerly known as April Truong)
Current employer or place of business: Spoiled Spa and Salon
Organization(s) I volunteer with: After opening Spoiled Spa and Salon in 2011, I have had the awesome opportunity donate time, goods, services and funds to the following organizations: SHARE Vancouver (donated clothes, participated in sock drives); Clark County Skills Center (cosmetology board as well as helping raise funds for their scholarship program); Courts for kids (fundraising); Children’s Center (fundraising); NW Battle Buddies (fundraising); Girlfriends race (performed beauty and massage services to help raise event funds); Susan G Koman Race for the Cure (performed pink hair extensions and temporary tattoos to help raise money for their rent); CAMEO (recently dissolved); NWCAVE (we are holding a fundraiser for them this May); and Modified style (performed hair and makeup to raise money for varies causes).
How I got involved: I had done some similar volunteer work on my own as a hair stylist, but opening a business has given me more opportunities to volunteer in our area!
Why I give back: I give back because I have the capabilities to do it! I grew up without a lot of financial support and was always working while going to school. I have some family members who battle different challenges in their lives that have affected the way I grew up. I understand the struggles that people can face, so now that I have the time and ability to contribute to my community, I feel excited to help!
Proudest moment as a volunteer: Looking around at my co-workers and employees and realizing I have created these opportunities for others to also get involved. Volunteering can be contagious!
What local challenge or issue are you most passionate about? I have personal connections with SO many needs, but I would say my top three are: family crisis or addiction issues; scholarships for ongoing education; and organizations to benefit youth.
Just for fun: What are your hidden talents? I can bake and decorate baked goods well! I like to play indoor soccer. I make up song lyrics with my kids to music on the radio – lol.
